Wetting agents are substances that reduce water's surface tension to allow drops to disperse over a surface, enhancing a liquid's spreading ability. Wetting agents can be made up of a variety of chemicals, all of which have this tension-lowering effect and are often known as surfactants. They are designed to overcome water repellence in soil; they can work by making water wetter. Soil wetting agents are essentially the same as detergents, reducing the surface tension of water and allowing it to wet the waxy surface of the soil particles, allowing water to move into the soil through pores. How wetting agents work?

Water repellency in soil naturally occurs and increases overtime. This is due to the build-up of hydrophobic coatings on soil particles and can also be caused by changes in soil charge, or soil particle orientation. This is particularly observed with sandy soils. Water repellency can severely impact turf or plant health because it starves root systems of water. Decreased soil penetration and drainage rates mean water can sit on the soil surface, resulting in waterlogged crops and fields.
